Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a lovely antique Burmese Art Glass lemonade tumbler made by the Mt. Washington Glass Company in the 1880's. The tumbler is decorated with an internal diamond-quilted pattern and has a glossy finish.
Designed by Frederick Shirley in 1885, this single layer glass achieved a delicate coloration of pink or salmon shading to yellow by the addition of uranium oxide and gold to the original glass batch. This created a yellow opaque glass which upon reheating caused the color to change into a soft pink. The uranium in the glass also causes the vase to fluoresce brightly when exposed to black light. This type internal design is pictured on page 35 of the book Mt. Washington Art Glass by Betty B. Measures 2 3/4" high with a 2 1/4" diameter top. This nice tumbler is in excellent Estate condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Burmese glass is highly collected and is also included in all major American Art Glass collections. This glass is rare today as it was very expensive to manufacture and was only made for a short period of time.
