The weight is formed as a low, clear hemispherical dome over an opaque black ground. To the right rises a smaller lilac bud. A slender pale green stem supports the motif, with two opposing leaves rendered in translucent olive-green with yellow shading along their central veins. The composition is framed by a continuous millefiori border of alternating canes: one type featuring a black star within white scalloped rims, the other pink-white scalloped petals surrounding a blue-and-white rosette. The circular garland sits close to the wall of the dome, forming a complete border around the central flower. The base is ground and polished flat, with a printed paper label reading PMcD Ltd Glass Studio - Hand Made in Crieff, Scotland. " The piece is accompanied by a navy-blue presentation box lined with padded satin, printed "Stone Gallery Burford" to the lid, together with a printed gallery card and handwritten note describing the item as "No 3 of PMD 2004 Collection. 1940s trained in glassmaking at Strathearn Glass in Crieff in the 1960s and became chief glassmaker at Perthshire Paperweights after its formation in 1968.
Following the closure of Perthshire Paperweights in 2002, he founded PMcD Glass Studio Ltd in Crieff, where he continued producing limited-edition paperweights of high technical quality until 2012. Crieff, located in Perth and Kinross, has long been a centre for Scottish glassmaking, especially lampwork and millefiori techniques associated with Strathearn and Perthshire studios. Traditional glass paperweights originated in mid-19th-century Europe as decorative desk objects and developed into a distinct art form combining lampwork and millefiori processes.
They remain popular with collectors and institutions for their artistry and regional associations. This example serves both as a collectable glass art piece and as an attractive small display object. It may be used for decorative arrangement, for desk or cabinet display, or for study reference in connection with British studio glassmaking of the early 21st century.
